Marriage certificate attestation in Malaysia
Marriage certificates are most often legalised for spouse and dependant visas, and the requesting embassy usually wants the full chain rather than a single stamp.
What applies to a marriage certificate
As a public document issued by a government agency, an original marriage certificate needs no secondary endorsement before the Ministry of Foreign Affairs attests it. A photocopy must be certified by a Notary Public first.
We also handle non marriage certificates, which Gulf employers frequently ask for alongside a visa application.
- 01
Issuing authority or notary public
The document is verified at source, or certified as a true copy by a notary public.
- 02
The relevant ministry
Education certificates go through the education authorities. Other documents go through the ministry that governs them.
- 03
Ministry of Foreign Affairs
The consular division at Wisma Putra in Putrajaya legalises the document for use abroad.
- 04
The destination embassy
The embassy or consulate of the destination country adds the final stamp. Most sit in Kuala Lumpur, a few in Putrajaya.
Civil and religious marriage certificates take different routes
Civil marriages are registered by Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara, which issues the certificate and the certified extracts.
Muslim marriages are registered by the state religious authority rather than JPN, so the first link in the chain is a different office. We confirm which applies to your certificate before submitting, because sending it to the wrong counter costs a week.
Commonly needed for
- Spouse and dependant applications across the Gulf states
- Family residence permits
- Name change records abroad
- Confirmation of marital status for employers
Worth knowing
Non marriage certificates, confirming you are not currently married, are a separate document and we handle those too.
Questions
Can you handle a non marriage certificate too?
Yes. Non marriage certificates are part of our standard document list and follow the same chain.
Does a religious marriage certificate follow the same route?
The registering authority differs, so we confirm the correct first step for your certificate before submitting rather than assuming.
