Civil documents
Death certificate attestation
Death certificates are legalised for estates, insurance and repatriation matters abroad, and the receiving party almost always wants the full chain.
What applies to this document
A death certificate is a public document issued by a government agency. If the original is presented, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs requires no secondary endorsement before its own attestation. A photocopy must first be certified by a Notary Public.
The destination country mission then adds the final stamp.
- 01
Issuing authority or notary public
The document is verified at source, or certified as a true copy by a notary public.
- 02
The relevant ministry
Education certificates go through the education authorities. Other documents go through the ministry that governs them.
- 03
Ministry of Foreign Affairs
The consular division at Wisma Putra in Putrajaya legalises the document for use abroad.
- 04
The destination embassy
The embassy or consulate of the destination country adds the final stamp. Most sit in Kuala Lumpur, a few in Putrajaya.
Where a Malaysian death certificate comes from
Death registration sits with Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara, which issues the certificate and certified extracts from the register.
Estates and insurance abroad usually want the certified extract rather than the original family copy, and they often want it legalised within a defined window, so starting early matters more here than on most documents.
Commonly needed for
- Estate and inheritance matters overseas
- Insurance and pension claims abroad
- Repatriation and burial arrangements
- Closing accounts held in another country
What we need to quote
Scans of the document and the destination country. We confirm which steps apply, what each costs and how long yours takes before anything is submitted.
Worth knowing
Where the death occurred overseas and the certificate is foreign, that document is authenticated by the issuing country mission in Malaysia first, which is a different first step.
Questions
Do you need the original death certificate?
If the original is presented, no secondary endorsement is required before Wisma Putra. A photocopy must be certified by a Notary Public first.
My document is not in English. Is that a problem?
Not for Wisma Putra, which requires documents not in English to be translated into English. We handle translation into English, Malay, Arabic, Persian, Mandarin and Tamil.
